Culture Eats Strategy for Lunch Running a business with many people can be a challenge; keeping everyone happy and engaged is a balancing act. Along the way, we have discovered our purpose and how it relates to each of our individual need to explore, self-expression and the need for fulfillment.

Those same employees have rallied behind this purpose and are a critical part of our success and without a doubt the most important and influential stakeholder in our business. In Fact, we refer to them as Arizona’s Homeowner Heroes as they are perhaps the hardest working teams in Arizona, many sweating in manual labor every day in the hot Arizona summers. They have in turn dubbed me Captain Arizona.

Our management team has discovered the concepts illustrated in Daniel Cable’s book,  Alive at Work , in which employee engagement is explored and cultivated. We have realized that there is an inbred, innate desire for humans to explore. This is realized and shown through self-expression, experimentation, and discovering how personal purpose fits in with our vision and mission.

We know that as our Homeowner Heroes tap into their personal unique talents and realize they are doing the things they were born to do; filling their lives with purpose and engagement as they are empowered to make our customers lives better. As management it is our job to encourage their contributions and ideas, fueling their sense of purpose and self-expression, while improving our company’s systems to achieve or exceed customer goals. When we take chances on implementing those contributions that don’t work out, we celebrate the failure as a learning experience.

In addition, we provide opportunities for employees to take advantage of training, so they identify and explore new latent skillsets. We pay for CDL school for drivers, reimburse for educational learning and skill training to assist in vocational career paths.

To encourage employee engagement, we reward our Heroes with retail or restaurant gift cards, or a local staycation when we receive positive reviews from their customers or other recognizable outstanding customer experiences.
